federico Babina

I am an Italian ( since 1969) architect and graphic designer (since 1994) that live and work in Barcelona (since 2007) but mostly I'm a curious person (since ever). Every day I try to rediscover a way to observe the world as through the eyes of a child. Children are able to have a vision of things totally uninhibited and without the conditioning of the experience. The children's drawings are always amazing and beautiful in their spontaneous simplicity and clarity. I like trying to explain the world I see through different techniques of expression. I like the richness of the language and the diversity of its forms. I do not want to confine me in a prison of a style or shape. Drawing and illustration are for me one of the ways to recount and photograph the thoughts, feelings and emotions. Every picture has a story and every picture is a witness of a story.

ZOOLOAMP

In this work, 20 lamps are transformed into animals with character and expressiveness that live, talk and breathe in a parallel universe, a kind of design zoo. As in a Pareidolia of design, I had fun looking for and recognising animals in the shapes of some of the iconic lamps of the design world: it is a simple and effective exercise in creativity and imagination that develops 'elastic thinking'. Our gaze is incapable of grasping the invisible and our reason mechanically draws its own conclusions and makes its own rigorous judgements based solely on the evidence of an appearance. I have tried not to send the brain the rational information for it to recognise through knowledge but leave it free to search for an instinctive association. ZOOLAMP is a series of illustrations where I play seriously with volumes, colours and shapes. Where everything that appears may not be what it seems. Lamps that make up a luminous zoo where animals are made and constructed of dedign.
